Icebreaker project needs to embrace Tasmanian innovation

Posted on

Following the announcement Shadow Minister for ICT & Innovation Madeleine Ogilvie today called on the Premier and Prime Minister to back Tasmanian innovation and enterprise.

“Our researchers quite rightly welcome the announcement of a new icebreaker,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“From the perspective of developing our innovation base and manufacturing capacity it is however extremely disappointing that the new vessel will be built off-shore.

“We have boat building expertise here in Tasmania and our skilled workforce deserves a chance to be a part of this lucrative project.

“Clearly there is an opportunity for our local industry here to engage commercially on this major project. Local know how, local workforce and local apprentices. Who wouldn’t want that?

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to support Tasmanian innovation capacity, trade based work opportunities and high end electronics engineering.

“It’s time to walk the talk on supporting Tasmanian innovation, industry and research.”
