Housing and child protection indicators get worse

Posted on

The most recent progress chart shows there are more people on the public housing waiting list compared to the same time last year.

Shadow Human Services Minister Rebecca White said there were 2771 people were waiting for public housing at the end of June this year.

“There are more people on the public housing waiting list compared to the previous quarter,” Ms White said.

“The wait for someone considered to have priority housing needs is still an unacceptable 22 weeks.

“The number of child protection notifications that met the threshold for statutory intervention and were referred for investigation increased compared to the same time last year and also increased from last quarter.

“This is further evidence of the pressure on workers in the child protection system who are dealing with an increased workload.

“The report also shows an alarming number of child protection cases unallocated at the end of June, which is before the crisis on the North West Coast was even known about.

“The Minister for Human Services is failing to meet the growing need for support from vulnerable Tasmanians and each progress report presents more alarming statistics to prove it.”
