Gonski funding shouldn’t have to repair cuts

Posted on

The Liberal Government looks set to confirm that education funding meant to support Gonksi reforms will instead go towards rehiring some of the teachers cut across Tasmania.

Shadow Education Minister said while any additional support for education is welcome, the Government is plugging a hole of its own making.

“Gonski funding should be in addition to regular state budget funding and not used to plug holes created by savage cuts,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Of course we would welcome more teachers being put back into Tasmanian classrooms but they shouldn’t have been cut in the first place.

“If the Liberals didn’t cut up two teachers from every school in Tasmania, an additional $11 million would go a lot further.

“The Government also needs to explain the cost of Workplace Renewal Incentive Program in education.

“The Liberals have treated education appallingly since coming to government.”
