Community Housing Ltd scholarships

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to achieving better community housing outcomes and partnerships.

Today’s Community Housing Ltd scholarships in Launceston’s Northern suburbs are a practical example of those partnerships working at a grass-roots level in the community.

The objectives of the scholarships are to target 12-18-year olds in Better Housing Future suburbs to help create equity and access to opportunities to advance education, skills building, employment opportunities, health, wellbeing and social inclusion through fundraising and offering scholarships in the performing arts, sporting and educational areas.

Congratulations to Steve Bevington and his CHL team and also thank you to Ricky Ponting and Daniel Geale for adding their sporting horsepower and insights to this initiative.

Community Housing Limit has been managing 1188 Better Housing Future Northern properties in the suburbs of Ravenswood, Waverley, Rocherlea, Mayfield and Mowbray since July 2014.
To date CHL has signed up 873 tenants on direct leases – 73.5% of its portfolio.

CHL has already participated in a range of community development activities including the Pioneer Parade Community Garden, Rocherlea Community Fun Day, Ravenswood Aus-Kick program and the Waverley Fishing Festival.

Additionally CHL has delivered 3 traineeships to residents from BHF areas in tenancy management, upgraded smoke alarms and installed more than 120 heat pumps in these properties.

Congratulations to CHL and also to the inaugural 2015 scholarship winners: Hamish Wooders, Legana Hughes, Sam Kopper and Callum Harrison.

Quote from Sarah Courtney: “The Better Housing Futures program has been a major step forward in housing reform across Tasmania with more than 4000 public housing properties transferred to four community housing organisations.

“This is a perfect example of community not-for-profit groups transforming the community housing portfolio and it reinforces the Tasmanian Government’s approach in this area.

“In addition to rejuvenating suburbs, CHL is re-engaging the communities and tenants and today’s scholarships are a chance for four young people to further their educational and training opportunities and chase their dreams.’’
