CHILD PROTECTION WORKERS STAND UP FOR CHILDREN IN IMMIGRATION DETENTION
TASMANIAN CHILD PROTECTION WORKERS DEMONSTRATE THEIR SOLIDARITY WITH VICTORIAN HEALTH WORKERS
HACSU Assistant Secretary Robbie Moore announced that HACSU Members working for Child and Youth Services in Launceston passed the following resolution at a union meeting held this week:
”That this meeting of Child Protection Workers in northern Tasmania congratulates Health Workers at the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital on their opposition to children being held in immigration detention centres.
Child Protection Workers know that detaining children harms them and often has lifelong negative impacts on their lives.
This meeting calls on the Australian Government to immediately release children from immigration detention centres.”
“This resolution has come about as a result of the distress that our Members know children in detention suffer.
“Every child deserves protection and care, and the fact that children are being held indefinitely in detention is a national disgrace.”
Last month hundreds of HACSU Members signed up to support the Tasmania Can Do More campaign, in response to the dismay generated by the drowning of 3 year old Aylan Kurdi.
“We know that many HACSU members share the concerns of these Child Protection Workers, and also want to stand up for children in immigration detention.
“The Australian Government can, and must, do more to protect all children.”
