Welcome news on population
Today’s ABS statistics are encouraging, but also reinforce the need for our upcoming comprehensive population strategy.
The figures released today show Tasmania’s population increased by 815 people in the March Quarter to be 516,111, the biggest quarterly increase since March 2011.
On top of that, net interstate migration is the highest it’s been in four years, and net overseas migration is the highest since March 2012.
Our population is growing because the economy is growing, jobs are being created, confidence is soaring and people are realising that Tasmania is the place to be.
But there is still a lot more to do. The Government’s population strategy will be released soon, and supported by our long-term Plan, this will help grow our population, help encourage Tasmanians who’ve left our shores to come back and to encourage more people to call Tasmania home.
