Tasmanian winery wins Gold in China
Tasmanian winery Bream Creek Vineyard has been awarded a Gold medal at the biggest and most prestigious wine and spirits competition in China – the 2015 China Wine and Spirits Awards.
The heavyweight blind tasting held in Hong Kong resulted in the 2011 vintage Bream Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir being recognised alongside some of the most famous wine brands in the world.
After becoming the largest and fastest growing wine market in the world, the Chinese wine market is receiving a further boost, thanks to the rising popularity of wines among younger consumers. With 37 million adults poised to attain drinking age within the next five years (that’s more than the population of Canada), experts say sales in this segment alone could skyrocket by as much as 200 per cent.
Bream Creek Vineyard Proprietor Fred Peacock said he was extremely proud to have taken out the award.
“The most renowned brands in the world compete in these awards and it is an honour to see that our wines are up there with the best on the planet,” Mr Peacock said.
“To see a Tasmanian wine awarded a Gold medal is a terrific thrill. We’ve always been committed to quality, but this further bolsters our desire to continue crafting some of Tasmania’s best wines and taking them to the world.
“Bream Creek is one of Tasmania’s oldest vineyards and as a pioneer of the Tasmanian wine industry we’re dedicated to making the very best Tasmanian wines and showcasing them to the world.
“Thanks to our success at CWSA, we look forward to the opportunity to stand out and grow the prestige of Tasmanian wines in the thriving Chinese market.”
One-hundred CWSA judges travelled from each corner of Hong Kong, China and Taiwan to attend the blind tasting, selected from the most prominent sommeliers, hoteliers, retailers, importers, and distributors from throughout the region. They are China’s leading buyers. Together they dominate the China market and are responsible for sales of 50 million bottles of wine and spirits each year.
CWSA Judge Fiona Luo reported the standard of wines and spirits was the highest ever seen before.
“CWSA is the international award recognised in China. Winners are the highest quality and it is useful for consumers and buyers to see CWSA Medals,” she said.
French national and Managing Director at Bacchus Club wine importer, Julien Amoris, said he was proud to have been part of the CWSA judging panel and to give opportunities to talented wineries such as Bream Creek Vineyard to be discovered and further develop their sales in China.

Bream Creek is Fred Peacock – and Bream Creek wines reflect Fred’s desire, as a pioneer of the wine industry in Tasmania, to make the very best Tasmanian wines and showcase them to the world. Planted in 1973 on Tasmania’s east coast, Bream Creek is one of the state’s oldest vineyards. The original 5 hectares consisted mainly of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. After purchasing the property in August 1990, Fred’s priority was to increase Pinot Noir plantings and introduce Sauvignon Blanc and Schonburger (the first commercial plantings in the Southern Hemisphere of this rare German varietal). With his dedication and passion, this pristine vineyard is now a world renowned 7.5 hectare showcase of grape varieties ideally suited to the cool maritime climate of East coast Tasmania.
