TETSUYA’S CONFIT OF PETUNA OCEAN TROUT™

Petuna awarded Best Aquaculture Practice for both ocean trout and salmon

Petuna ocean trout has been awarded the Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) certification – a standard that only the world’s most sustainable salmon and ocean trout farms can attain.

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) announced Petuna Aquaculture was the world’s first marine-farming company to attain Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification for both salmon and trout at the same farm site.

GAA assessed every aspect of Petuna’s operations, including its environmental responsibility, community relations, employee safety, food safety, animal health and care of wildlife, to ensure it was a world-class organisation.

Petuna ocean trout is a favourite among some of Australia’s finest chefs and has been the main ingredient in Tetsuya’s confit of Petuna ocean trout (pictured) for over 20 years.

Petuna CEO Mark Porter said the organisation was extremely proud to become the world’s first marine-farming company to attain BAP for both ocean trout and Atlantic salmon.

“Environmental and social responsibility is a key to our business and adding ocean trout to our already accredited Atlantic salmon demonstrates the continued hard work and dedication our team puts in across every aspect of our business,” Mr Porter said.

“With only 15 per cent of aquaculture ventures worldwide receiving third party accreditation, we are proud to have Petuna recognised for our sustainability work in not only one but both out farmed species.”

Grown in Macquarie Harbour on the state’s West Coast, Petuna ocean trout and Atlantic salmon benefit from the unique currents of fresh water from the Franklin-Gordon Rivers, mixed with the salt water from the Great Southern Ocean. These conditions mimic the natural environment where salmon and ocean trout thrive and grow, ensuring Petuna can deliver the best quality fish around Australia from this pristine environment.

Established in 1949 by Peter and Una Rockliff, Petuna employs over 270 full-time staff located in sites around Tasmania. Peter and Una have spent decades perfecting their artisan seafood produce.

Petuna ocean trout and Atlantic salmon are available through leading fish specialty stores around Australia.

The Petuna Story

Peter and Una Rockliff together with their families have spent many decades perfecting their artisan tasting products. Proudly Tasmanian, Petuna was established in 1949 and is the largest Multi-Species Seafood provider from Tasmania. Peter and Una’s work pioneering ocean trout and Atlantic salmon in aquaculture has been recognised with an Order of Australia Medal.

‘Born to fish’, Peter as a boy spent much of his time fishing. In 1949 he travelled eastward along the coast looking for fish. He met Una Barnett, who was from a well-known fishing family in Bridport and they were married soon after.

Together they joined their first names together to name one of their boats ‘Petuna’. In these early days Peter would go out fishing and Una would line up prospective customers on wharf and pre-sell Peter’s fresh daily catch. By the 1990s Peter and Una had significantly grown their local business and evolved the business to include aquaculture.

A pioneering couple, Peter and Una’s contribution to the Tasmanian economy and the aquaculture industry has been recognised with an Order of Australia Medal. While in their 80s now, Peter and Una are still active in the business, with Peter regularly seen at the Devonport production facility.

In 2010 Sealord Group, Australia and New Zealand’s leading sustainable seafood brand, became a 50 per cent partner in Petuna Aquaculture. The combination of a family business with a global enterprise has allowed for significant multi-million dollar investments, including a major upgrade at the Devonport factory and large investments in marine farm and hatchery infrastructure at Macquarie Harbour and Cressy.
