The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union of Tasmania will continue its run of strong leadership, with the incumbent team of state secretary Trevor Gauld and State Organisers Michael Anderson and Todd Lambert being returned unopposed at the recent quadrennial elections.
The returning secretary said the result was humbling and a credit to the hardworking delegates and officers of the CEPU.
“I am immensely grateful to the hard-working members of our union for this opportunity to continue to lead the CEPU in Tasmania,” he said.
“It’s humbling to be able to serve the men and women of our union for another four years.”
The result will equip the union to face and overcome the challenges of the future, he said.
“Working people in Tasmania face unprecedented attacks and pressure on their living standards and working conditions and our team will stand shoulder to shoulder with our members to fight for what’s fair.”
State secretary Trevor Gauld also welcomed the news that the unions national secretary, Allen Hicks was returned to his role.
“Now, more than ever, we need to speak Nationally with a single voice and clearly tell those who seek to undermine the living standards of working Australians that we will fight back and Allen Hicks is the right person for the job.”
“With the attacks on penalty rates, the unfair China Free Trade Agreement, a government threatening to re-introduce the draconian ABCC and attempts to sell off the nation’s electricity networks to private interests, there has never been more to fight for as a union member.”
Mr Gauld also acknowledged the election of David Moore as Communications Secretary as providing valuable direction to a core group of Tasmanian CEPU members.
“David has been a tireless and insightful rank a file member participating on the local Committee of Management and is a man of great integrity.” he said “together we will continue to work to consolidate the resources of the full CEPU in Tasmania to provide an even stronger voice for Tasmania’s Communication, Electrical and Plumbing industry workers.”
Mr Gauld was appointed state secretary of the CEPU in May 2013 and his team has bucked the trend of national decline in Union membership by overseeing more than 10% growth in Tasmanian membership in the past 2 years.
