Opposition Leader Bryan Green this morning announced Labor’s policy to support Tasmania’s special timbers industry.
“It’s critical that we have a vibrant and successful special timbers sector,” Mr Green said.
“Labor envisages a management plan that the special timbers industry can rely on for the next 200 years.
“That’s why Labor will support a special timbers industry strategy that truly reflects the long-term security of the sector.
“We’ve been in consultation with the industry about a ‘tread widely, tread lightly’ approach.
“Through careful management, Labor believes we can supply our specialty cabinetmakers, wooden boat builders, wood turners and musical instrument makers with sufficient material.
“This all about striking an appropriate balance.
“Labor supports closely regulated and selective special timbers harvesting that does not threaten the outstanding universal values of the TWWHA’s boundary extension, in line with TFA legislation.
“Labor does not believe it is appropriate for industrial forestry or mining to occur anywhere within a World Heritage area.
“We also understand the benefit of reaching a lasting, bi-partisan position on the issue to secure jobs and allow for industry renewal.
“We don’t believe this can be achieved while the Liberals continue to use inflammatory language, as demonstrated in their World Heritage Draft Management Plan.
“I have written to Resources Minister Paul Harriss expressing Labor’s desire to reach a bi-partisan position.
“Tasmania has a proud history of using special timbers and the industry deserves to be put on a truly sustainable footing.”
