The Liberal Government has broken a massive promise to the racing industry, effectively cutting its funding.
Racing Minister Jeremy Rockliff has revealed he’ll end the current indexation agreement with the industry.
Shadow Racing Minister Scott Bacon said the Liberals have gone back on their word.
“Before the election the Liberals promised to increase stakes money. It’s a blatant broken promise,” Mr Bacon said.
“A February 26 Liberal press release said “boosting stakes across all three racing codes will be a priority for a majority Liberal Government, as this is the key to driving growth in the industry”.
“The industry has every right to feel badly let down.
“This is another example of the Liberals promising everything to everyone before the election and failing to deliver.
“We know a funding cut will have huge ramifications for the racing industry and the people it employs.
“The Racing Minister has been sitting on a report since October, that should be immediately released in full.
“It’s our understanding that the report calls for indexation to continue, which completely contradicts the Government’s announcement.
“A 2013 report found the racing industry is worth more $103 million to the Tasmanian economy and employs around 1000 people full-time.”
