The Labor Opposition has welcomed Nyrstar’s $52 million investment to secure the future of its Tasmanian operation.
Shadow Energy Minister David Llewellyn said the job creating announcement provides certainty going forward.
“Tasmania has suffered significant blows to jobs in recent times, particularly in the resources and manufacturing sectors,” Mr Llewellyn said.
“Nyrstar’s announcement is good from both an employment point of view, but also when it comes to energy security.
“Major industrials are critical to maintaining the integrity of the Tasmanian energy network.
“Labor supports the agreement that has been struck between Nyrstar and the Government which will diversify the business and help to further reduce its environmental impact.
“This has been a lengthy process which began under the previous Labor Government. I am pleased that there is now certainty for Nyrstar workers and the broader economy.”
