The Government’s number one priority is jobs.

Yesterday’s announcement at Nyrstar shows that when Government is prepared to work strategically with business, not only will existing jobs be secured, but new jobs will be created.

Today I visited United Engineering to talk about the Nyrstar agreement. United is just one of the many businesses that will benefit from the agreement.

It’s encouraging to see a business like this expanding and growing their business. It’s even more encouraging to see that United are employing more people.

This shows that confidence in the Tasmanian economy is strong, which is backed up by today’s NAB Monthly Business Survey. The Survey shows that business confidence in Tasmania is the highest in the nation and that business conditions are by far the strongest in the country.

This is great news and shows that the Government’s long-term Plan is providing the support that businesses need.

While confidence is high, retail trade is at record levels, the construction and building sector remains strong and the economy is growing, there is still a lot more that we can do.

That’s why the Government is getting on with the job of supporting businesses like Nyrstar in the South and Bell Bay Aluminium in the North and the $60 million Northern Cities Major Development initiative which is part of our $315 million jobs package.

We are capitalising on the gains and building on the growing momentum that we are seeing in Tasmania.
