… AMA Family Doctor Week 19-25 July 2015 …

AMA Tasmania is set to launch AMA Family Doctor Week 2015, which aims to recognise the pivotal role that GPs play in caring for Tasmanian families across the state.

AMA Tasmania President A/Prof Tim Greenaway said with Tasmanians currently suffering from the flu at twice the five-year average, the role of the 500 GPs operating across Tasmania was more important than ever before.

“Almost 90 per cent of Australians have a regular GP and enjoy better health because of this ongoing and trusted relationship,” Dr Greenaway said.

“GPs are absolutely vital for Tasmania’s stretched public hospital system as the preventative and tailored care provided by GPs keeps people out of hospitals and associated health costs down.

“Family doctors know the medical and family history of their patients and provide a broad range of services from the cradle to the grave, they also manage 90 per cent of the problems they encounter, making general practice the patient’s health care home.

“They are highly skilled and trained to provide excellent health care to people through all stages of life.”

Dr Greenaway said Family Doctor Week was an opportunity to highlight how fundamental family doctors were to the state’s health care system and quality patient health care, as well as acknowledging their expertise and commitment to patient care.
