Treasurer Peter Gutwein has done nothing to water down expectations that politicians are in for a big pay rise.
Mr Gutwein did not deny during Budget Estimates that a pay rise of 8% or more could be in the pipeline.
The Liberals have referred the issue of politicians pay to the Industrial Commission knowing that it could result in a windfall gain for politicians.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said 8% is a figure previously put forward by the Industrial Commission when assessing MPs’ pay.
“We know a pay rise determined by the Industrial Commission is likely to 8% or more,” Mr Green said.
“Peter Gutwein has a chance to dispute the figure today in Estimates but instead dodged the question.
“A pay rise of that magnitude would not go down well with the Tasmanian public.
“That’s why Labor supported tying pay rates for politicians to the public sector. “
