The Australian Medical Association (Tasmania) has responded to today’s announcement of
an interim CEO and Governing Council for the Tasmanian Health Service, noting it is
positive to see reform occurring, however what is most important are good outcomes for
patient care in Tasmania.
AMA Tasmania Vice President Dr Stuart Day said the AMA welcomed the vast experience of
the members of the nine members of the Governing Council for the Tasmanian Health
Service from 1 July 2015.
“The Liberal Government hopes the Governing Council will bring the local knowledge from
each region of the state necessary for the creation of a truly statewide service, which our
members certainly hope will be the case.
“However, given the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) will be principally responsible for most
tertiary services and complex cases in Tasmania, it is regrettable that there is a lack of
clinical representation from Hobart on the Council.
“The fact there is no senior clinician from Hobart is an over sight and renders the Governing
Council unbalanced.
“While it is disappointing not to see the announcement of a permanent CEO for the
Tasmanian Health Service, we acknowledge that there is a need for an interim CEO,” Dr
Day said.
“The AMA Tasmania would like to congratulate Dr Anne Brand on her appointment as
interim CEO.
“It is pleasing to see the Government pushing through these major changes, however our
main concern is seeing better health outcomes for all Tasmanians.”
