Labor Leader Bryan Green has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the asset sales planned for Forestry Tasmania.
“The Liberals are embarking on a process, without a mandate, that would see Forestry Tasmania sell off its most viable assets,” Mr Green said.
“This is far too important to be rushed into.
“Tasmanians need to understand whether Forestry Tasmania can meet future supply demands and remain viable without these assets on its books.
“Forestry Tasmania’s chairman, Bob Annells, told ABC radio this morning that selling off the plantation would not necessarily generate the funds needed for the business to survive.
“The Liberal Government should support the establishment of a Joint Select Committee to inquire into these matters. If the Liberals refuse, a Legislative Council Committee would be able to expose the potential risks of selling off these assets in a fire sale.
“The inquiry would need to be convened quickly so it could y report back prior to August 30 this year.
“That would fit in with the timeframe outlined by Mr Annells this morning.”
