The Government is committed to supporting Tasmanians with asbestos-related diseases and their families.

A levy is collected on all workers compensation premiums to ensure there is enough money in the scheme.

For 2015-16, the independent actuary has recommended the levy is reduced from four per cent to 3.5 per cent, because claims are lower than expected.

The aim of the scheme is to provide Tasmanian workers and their families living with asbestos-related diseases, with fair and fast compensation; and to give them more options to improve their quality of life in what is a difficult and stressful situation.

The scheme provides for the payment of compensation, and certain other expenses, related to the contraction of asbestos-related diseases, by workers who have been exposed to asbestos in the course of their employment.

Since commencement, the scheme has both raised and paid out just over $21.5 million for 58 accepted claims.
