Under the Hodgman Liberal Government, Tasmania is heading in the right direction and we are building on the momentum to drive economic growth and create jobs.
A key part of our Plan is engaging with and investing in our Tasmanian workforce. I’m pleased to announce the Government will invest $526,000 in an innovative pilot program to develop core and essential skills for Tasmania’s vocational students.
Developed by TasTAFE working with the Australian Council of Education Research, the Core Skills for Work Program is about delivering real skills for real jobs to drive economic growth and prosperity.
This program will see 3,000 students improve their core skills in essential areas like reading, writing, numeracy and problem solving, along with technical skills.
Students participating in the pilot program will be drawn from key industries, with the aim of raising industry productivity by empowering participants to improve their core skills.
There will also be a cohort of unemployed students invited to take part in the pilot, with the aim of equipping these students with the essential core skills they need to complete their training and gain employment.
In collaboration with TasTAFE, other Registered training providers will also have an opportunity for their students to participate in the program and receive additional core skills training support.
This program will not only improve core skills and employability for participants, it will lead to more effective training methods and improvements in the skills sector.
The Hodgman Liberal Government contributes more than $100 million annually to training and workforce development, supporting business to grow through skilled employees.
We have a long-term Plan to grow the economy and create jobs and a key aspect of our plan is investment in the skills and training needs of our workforce.
The Government is committed to helping businesses grow by ensuring Tasmanians have the best possible training and employment opportunities. This is reflected in the economic indicators which show business confidence in Tasmania at national highs and the unemployment rate falling by one per cent since the election. We are delivering on our long-term plan to improve the opportunities for all Tasmanians.
