Taskforce should be last resort – not the first option

Labor Leader Bryan Green today condemned the State Government for raising the white flag over job losses at Caterpillar in Burnie.

“A transition task force should be the last resort, after every attempt is made to reverse Caterpillar’s decision,” Mr Green said.

“The Government was clearly blindsided by Caterpillar’s announcement and is doing nothing to take the fight up to the company to save 280 jobs.

“Caterpillar gave a commitment to continue manufacturing in Burnie and it needs to explain what has changed when the operation remains so profitable.

“The workers deserve an answer and they need to know why State and Federal governments have given up on them.

“The workforce has done everything possible to support Caterpillar and has been kicked in the teeth.

“Will Hodgman has finally turned up after being missing in action since Caterpillar’s announcement and Tony Abbott’s ‘hands off’ approach is pathetic.

“Caterpillar has misled us and the company must be held to account.

“If this company is making profits from producing high value mining equipment and says it can’t compete what hope is there for any manufacturing on the North-West Coast let alone the rest of the country.

“We need a national debate over the future of manufacturing and Tony Abbott should be leading it, not sitting on his hands.”
