FEDERAL Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson took great pleasure in officially handing over a large quantity of football gear to the Bridgewater PCYC this morning for its new footy in schools program.

Mr Hutchinson presented the nine big boxes containing 140 pairs of football boots as well as jumpers and footballs to the club after successfully sourcing business sponsorship to buy the gear with the help of Human Services Minister Marise Payne.

The suggestion for the footy gear project came from a community forum at Bridgewater with Senator Payne and Mr Hutchinson earlier in the year.

Bridgewater assistant club manager Andrew Dean said that the football gear would be used to encourage primary school children from the region to take up the sport.
He said that the club had organised football clinics to be followed up by a mini football roster in the Gagebrook, Herdsmen’s Cove, East Derwent and St Paul’s primary schools.
But the club had needed football boots and other gear for the children so they could take part.
Mr Dean said that once-a-week clinics and games were planned and the club would also provide transport between the schools for students taking part in the roster games.
Mr Hutchinson said that physical exercise was really important particularly for primary school children and that football was a great way to build team spirit and other social skills of great value in later life.
“It’s wonderful to see this project come to fruition,’’ he said.
