Labor has called on the Liberal Government to reverse its regressive decision on the procurement rules around caged eggs.
Opposition Leader Bryan Green this afternoon launched a petition calling for the policy change.
“Labor was proud to back free-range and barn laid eggs in government and we will do it again,” Mr Green said.
“This is not about limiting consumer choice – it is about leadership.
“Egg producers will make the transition to cage-free farming according to demand.
“And as demand increases, the price will come down.
“As major customers, the Government can play a very powerful role in driving demand for free-range and barn laid eggs.
“We will work with egg producers to help them make the transition to cage-free eggs.
“I firmly believe that public opinion on free range eggs has well and truly shifted.
“This afternoon in parliament the Liberal Party opposed our motion supporting cage-free eggs.
“The Government’s contribution to this afternoon’s debate was deplorable.
“They’re sending a very regressive message to the community.”
