The Liberal Government is rorting taxpayers’ money to provide hefty redundancy payments to encourage workers to leave the public service.

“Will Hodgman does not deny that senior employees are being shifted to new short term positions that have been invented so they can receive payouts,” Labor Leader Bryan Green said.

“Mr Hodgman has admitted it is happening in the Department of Health but he won’t reveal how widespread this dubious practice is across Government agencies.

“How many other short term positions have been created in order for people to receive redundancies?

“How much is it costing Tasmanian taxpayers?

“Mr Hodgman says this practice is in accordance with the State Service guidelines but that doesn’t make it right.

“The Liberals can claim all they like that this practice is all above board but these serious allegations cannot be swept under the carpet.

“Will Hodgman says he will use whatever mechanism is available to the government to cut jobs but he must step in and stamp out this rort.

“How can Mr Hodgman possibly support this blatant rorting of taxpayers’ money when he claims to be reining in expenditure?

“The Government is pushing workers out the backdoor using improper practices.”
