TasWater crews have repaired a series of burst water mains which affected the suburbs of West Hobart, Mt Stuart, Lenah Valley and South Hobart.

Water is now being restored to all areas with the outage affecting more than 500 homes, businesses and other properties.

TasWater Chief Executive Officer Mike Brewster says that maintenance teams have been working through the night and well into today to restore services.

“At around 6.30pm last night, broken water mains in Forest Road and Liverpool Crescent in West Hobart saw customers lose water pressure in West Hobart and later Mt Stuart and Lenah Valley. The water supply was cut off to ensure crews could perform the repairs safely,” Mr Brewster said.

“Due to the configuration of the network, extra pressure was placed onto other sections of the system which resulted in a broken valve in Nevin St, South Hobart,” he said.

“We would like to thank affected customers for their patience during this major outage. Our crews worked around the clock and did a fantastic job to get the major work completed safely in such a short time,” he said.

Around ten properties in Forest Road and Liverpool Crescent were affected by flooding in gardens.

The cause of the original split in the water main was the result of old and degraded infrastructure giving way. As is standard practice with such incidents, an internal review will be conducted to investigate the cause and response to guide future improvements of systems and procedures.

Customers are reminded that as supply is restored there may be some discolouration of water. Please run your taps until the water runs clear.

Anyone with ongoing problems relating to water supply or water pressure are asked to call 13 6992.
