The high price of breaking promises
Will Hodgman might believe his government is immune from the type of political backlash we’ve seen in Queensland, but he can’t ignore the lessons completely.
Labor Leader Bryan Green says Queenslanders rejected a government that promised one thing and did another.
“There are lessons to be learnt from Campbell Newman’s dramatic fall by all sides of politics,” Mr Green said.
“Mr Newman painted himself as a friend to workers and then took the axe to essential services, sacking 14,000 public servants.
“Will Hodgman’s promise to only reduce the size of the public sector by 500 positions should be ringing in his ears.
“He’s now sacking more than 1200 workers, 861 in his first year of governing alone.
“He promised time after time to protect frontline services but schools will go back this week minus 266 teachers.
“He promised to end subsidies to Forestry Tasmania but then squeezed $30 million out of TasNetworks.
“At the very least voters expect a government to follow through on its core promises.
“Will Hodgman has already failed to keep his promises and he would be wise to heed the warnings coming from Victoria, Queensland and the Federal Liberal Government.”
