Respite care is important for carers and those they care for
Respite care plays an important role in providing care and support for carers and the people they care for.
With more than 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia there’s a good chance that if you’re not already caring for someone, you know someone who is.
Carers are generally aged between 18-64, and spend an average of 40 hours a week in their caring role, as well as balancing paid work. Caring is demanding, therefore respite care can reduce the carers stress levels, give them invaluable time out, and improve their quality of life.
For the senior needing care, respite also gives them a break from their daily routine, and a chance to be with others.
Take for example Gilli, who is an 83 year old musician and retired English teacher. Gilli – who lives with her son in Byron Bay – has enjoyed respite care at Feros Village Byron Bay on two occasions. She first visited Feros Village at Byron for some respite a year ago and, on both occasions has really enjoyed her time there.
Gilli said that respite care gives her a chance to relax, read, write poetry and meet new people. And while her son gets a well-earned break, Gilli points out that she also enjoys the time out too.
