A slump in retail turnover in Tasmania contradicts Treasurer Peter Gutwein’s misleading rhetoric over spending in the State’s economy.

“The latest ABS retail trade figures show that while turnover rose nationally in December it dropped by 1.3 per cent seasonally adjusted in Tasmania,” Mr Bacon said.

“The trend figure also fell by 0.2 per cent, falling for the fourth consecutive month.

“Mr Gutwein continues to say Tasmania has the strongest retail trade on record but that is clearly not supported by the ABS data.

“The reality is that retail turnover in Tasmanian is at its lowest levels in almost 12 months.

“It is a worrying trend, not helped by the Liberals plan to cut thousands of Tasmanian jobs including teachers and health workers.
