Soldiers Memorial Avenue; a Walk to Remember

Posted on

The Soldiers Memorial Avenue at the Queens Domain will be transformed into a focal point for the whole of Tasmania.

The Federal Government today announced Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland would share in $7.45 million funding from the ANZAC Centenary Public Fund.

Tasmania’s $1.1 million will go towards landscaping the Memorial Avenue corridor, where 520 trees planted in 1918 and 1919 serve as an enduring memory of the soldiers from greater Hobart who died while serving in the Great War.

The fund will also be used to construct community facilities including picnic shelters and pavilions that will ultimately link the Domain with the Cenotaph, providing a place for reflection.

This is a significant milestone for the Soldiers Memorial Avenue, the largest of its kind in Tasmania, marking a step toward the finalisation of the nationally significant place of remembrance.

I commend the Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue and the Hobart City Council who have worked collaboratively for almost a decade to deliver this project.

The federal funding is in addition to the $300,000 provided to construct the Flame of Remembrance at the Hobart Cenotaph to be unveiled on ANZAC day 2015. The Australian government’s support for these priority projects of our State Government is greatly appreciated.

The Liberal Government remains a strong supporter of Tasmania’s 11,000 war veterans and ex-service personnel.
