November 9th: The Jeremy Ball Big Tree Walk

Posted on

You are invited to join the friends of the Blue Tier on November 9th for the Jeremy Ball Big Tree Walk, a tribute to Jeremy’s involvement in the BlueTier campaign and to the success he helped us achieve in saving at least this small part of the BlueTier…the upper Groom River catchment.

We, friends of the Blue Tier, met Jeremy during the 2002 State election. He immediately embraced our campaign to save the BlueTier and was a constant source of inspiration, fun, clever ideas and motivation. Jeremy helped us build the original track to the Big Tree (Blue Tier Gaint), organised and spoke brilliantly at countless meetings promoting the northeast as a bushwalking destination, highlighting the need for conservation and the importance of protecting water catchments such as the Groom River, home to the Blue Tier Giant. Tom and Jeremy kicked off what became a 5 week vigil to protect the Groom River Valley and his parents, Caroline and John were among the 10 people arrested on the Blue Tier. During the vigil Jeremy ran the media campaign ensuring that we were on the radio, in the newspaper and on the news almost daily. Jeremy desgned and wrote our BlueTier “See It Save it” brochure and assisted in rewriting the Northeast Highlands National Park Proposal.

12 years ago on the 9th of November Jeremy organised the first public walk to the Blue Tier Giant… 100 people came on the day, which was quite overwhelming, and the track to the tree was well and truly marked by the 100 pairs of feet – the attached flyer from 2002 is a reminder of that day. The track has recently been rebuilt magnificently by John ‘Snapper’ Hughes and his team of fabulous young people.

The way will be signposted from the top of the Weldborough Pass and we will meet at the start of the track at 11am (Sunday, November 9th). The track is 3 km from the highway.
