Labor backs cannabis committee’s findings

Posted on

The Labor Opposition welcomes all of the recommendations put forward by the Legislative Council committee looking at medicinal cannabis.

Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings commends the Upper House members on the large amount of work put into the report.

“The Legislative Council report is consistent with Labor’s policy on medicinal cannabis,” Ms Giddings said.

“The committee’s six recommendations represent common sense and much needed reform.

“We’ve seen a number of personal examples over the last few months illustrating just why cannabis should be available for medicinal use.

“Labor strongly believes legislative change on medicinal cannabis has broad community support.

“It’s disappointing to see the Liberal Government seemingly dismiss the report almost as soon as it was tabled.

“Despite the Liberal member of the committee, Leonie Hiscutt, not putting forward a dissenting report, a tweet from the Premier’s Chief of Staff indicates the Government does not support the findings.

“This is a bizarre way to broadcast Government policy.

“Who took the time to study the committee’s report before the tweet was sent?

“Unlike the Liberals, Labor supports change when it comes to medicinal cannabis and on behalf of the thousands of Tasmanians who petitioned for change, calls on the Government to implement the committee’s findings.”
