Hodgman won’t answer questions over fixed term contracts

Posted on

Premier Will Hodgman has missed a golden opportunity to clear up the confusion around how fixed term contracts fit in with his public sector cuts.

Deputy Labor Leader Michelle O’Byrne said the Premier failed to answer a simple yes or no question.

“We simply want to know if terminated fixed term contracts count towards the Government’s target of 821 in this financial year,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“We suspect they don’t, which would mean a lot more than 821 people leaving the public sector.

“Of course some fixed term contracts are linked with permanent positions but others are stand-alone roles.

“The onus is on the Liberal Government to clear up the confusion and explain exactly how many people are likely to leave the workforce.

“Reports today that TasTAFE is set to be harshly cut are also deeply concerning to the Opposition.

“70 jobs would equate to more than 10 per cent of TasTAFE’s staff.

“The sooner the Government ends its habit of secrecy, the better.”
