Launceston takes a stand on mental health
WorkSafe Tasmania Month, 29 September – 31 October 2014
Launceston will be a hub of healthier minds and healthier workplaces after it holds two major mental
health events.
As a part of WorkSafe Tasmania Month 2014, a mental health expo and a free information seminar on
identifying and supporting mental health and wellbeing issues in the workplace will be held in Launceston
today.
Recent Tasmanian workplace injury statistics reveal the average mental health claim costs around
$29,500, while the average physical injury claim costs is approximately $10,500.
It is figures such these that have driven OzHelp CEO Doug Vautier to take action to raise awareness
amongst Tasmanians about the severe nature of work related mental illness.
“OzHelp is determined to empower and educate people on the importance of mental health and
wellbeing at work,” Mr Vautier said.
“Mental stability is just as important as physical stability in ensuring an employee’s wellbeing, and a
healthy mind allows workers to be both happy and productive in their roles at work.”
Presented by Cornerstone Youth Services (headspace) and the Mental Health Week Expo cohort,
comprising of representatives from eight Launceston mental health organisations, the Mental Health
Expo will also be held at the Albert Hall in Launceston. The Mental Health Expo will provide helpful
information, stalls, guest speakers, chill out zones and activities such as massages, tai chi and zumba
classes.
The information seminar, Identifying and Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing Issues in the
Workplace commences at 9am today at the Launceston Country Club and will highlight the big issues
facing mental health and ways to identify and support mental illness at work.
