HCC should sell Council Centre to build Hotel

Posted on

Alderman Marti Zucco said today that “The Hobart City Council should sell the Council centre at the corner or Davey and Elizabeth Street to make way for an opportunity for the redevelopment of what was the former Hydro building to a Hotel”

Alderman Zucco also said “This building which is at a prominent corner linking the waterfront to the City would be an ideal site for a Hotel and provide the city and waterfront with much needed hotel rooms”

Alderman Zucco added that “The building is not being fully utilized by Council and alternatives can be found to accommodate HCC staff elsewhere. Such as either lease a floor of the former Marine Board building or alternatively build on the current HCC site at Town Hall either options would be feasible alternatives

He also said that “In discussions with retiring Alderman John Freeman the council could sell the site to a potential investor and to develop the site for a niche hotel walking distance to the waterfront and City.

Alderman John Freeman said that “This would have been on reason to stay on Council and see this proposal come to fruition but the time has come to move on and I welcome Alderman Zucco interest in seeing this happen”

Alderman Freeman added that “At the time Council purchased this site it was much needed for council staff and the time has come for the HCC to re-evaluate the site and sell the building for a much more needed use and a hotel is what would be appropriate for the site”

In conclusion Alderman Zucco said that” I have had the pleasure in working with Alderman Freeman for near a quarter of a century and I am excited in pursing the sale of this site on a number of fronts being the HCC not requiring as much space the other being the needs of the city and of course my sparring partner and good friend Alderman Freeman”
