Community celebrate the opening of the new centre
PORT Sorell’s new Community, Recreation and Performing Arts Centre opened its doors at 2pm today, to the delight of local residents.
Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson said the Centre will host a range of activities and events that will benefit the people of Port Sorell.
“The new recreation and sporting facilities will help promote and encourage residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle in the community,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“The indoor sporting arena will be able to host sports all year round which should lead to an increase in membership.
“Other facilities incorporated into the centre include a playing arena for indoor sport and a multi-purpose hall, which will be available for the community to use for meetings and other activities.”
Tasmanian Government Whip Roger Jaensch said the local economy will be boosted through greater community participation and attendance at activities held at the Centre.
“Educational opportunities including classes on computing will be available for people of all ages and abilities,” Mr Jaensch said.
Mayor Michael Gaffney (MLC) said the Council is very pleased to provide a modern facility for the people of Port Sorell and both Artas Architects and Fairbrother are to be congratulated on their excellent work.
“There has been an extraordinary amount of time and effort in getting this project off the ground,” Cr Gaffney said.
“I would like to thank both Federal and State Governments for their financial support. Community groups and Camp Banksia users have already expressed their interest in using the facilities and no doubt it will be actively used day and night.”
The project was jointly funded, with the Australian Government contributing $500,000, the Tasmanian Government contributing $1 million and the Latrobe Council providing $1.1 million.
