Celebrating Southern Football’s Finest

Posted on

Southern Tasmania’s football community celebrated its annual night of nights tonight at the Football Federation Tasmania Southern Football Awards in Hobart.

Representing the Premier, it was great to join in the acknowledgments for the best players, leading goal scorers and referees over the past season.

Football – or soccer, as it is still commonly known among those yet to be converted – is one of our fastest growing sports, and the Liberal Government is pleased to support its development.

We provide $200,000 a year to the Football Federation Tasmania divided equally between elite programs for talented young men and women players and grassroots initiatives to further boost participation.

Tasmanian players who go on to compete at higher levels are great ambassadors for our State, while, even more importantly, there are major health and social benefits from more people, from all walks of life, participating in organised sport.

On behalf of the Government, I congratulate all of the award winners tonight, and particularly this year’s recipient of the Vic Tuting Medal, presented to the best player in the Southern Premier League.
Paul Harriss, Minister for Resources
