Resources Minister flags unbudgeted spending

Posted on

Resources Minister Paul Harriss has confirmed the Government will continue to subsidise the transportation of timber residues to Bell Bay post October to the tune of at least $1 million.

Labor Leader Bryan Green welcomed certainty for the industry, but said there was one small catch, there is no provision in the Budget.

“Labor backs a continuation of the subsidy, but unlike the Liberals we would have been upfront about paying for it.

“Does Treasurer Peter Gutwein know his budget’s about to take a $1 million hit or was it indeed his idea to keep the subsidy off the books?

“Will Forestry Tasmania be expected to pay the subsidy with additional debt?

“Just like ignoring the need to financially support Forestry Tasmania, this is the Liberals trying to hide tough financial decisions.

“It all goes back to their extravagant election campaign spending, which is now being paid for by hard working public servants.”
