Ominous start to week of scrutiny
The first morning of the estimates process has highlighted the Liberal Government’s unwillingness to provide detail over its own budget.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said Liberal ministers simply can’t explain where huge savings will come from or how targets will be met.
“The Liberals have flagged $119 million in savings when it comes to supplies and consumables but can’t name one specific item that will go,” Mr Green said.
“Tasmanians deserve to know what won’t be there when they next visit a public hospital or school.
“Liberal Ministers talk about their savings as if they have already been achieved but the truth is the pain is yet to come.
“Ministers are also unwilling to explain where in departments jobs will be cut.
“The Liberals promised to quarantine frontline services but have failed to clarify which positions are safe and which aren’t.
“The estimates process is designed to shed light on key budget initiatives but it appears Tasmanians will be kept in the dark this week.”
