Hidding must rule out drop in frontline police numbers

Posted on

Police Minister Rene Hidding must rule out a reduction in police or vital non-sworn support staff for frontline officers as the Government cuts more than 1000 public servants.

Shadow Police Minister David Llewellyn said Mr Hidding must rule out police taking redundancies.

“Rene Hidding must absolutely rule reducing police numbers as he slashes the police budget,” Mr Llewellyn said.

“The Liberals’ Budget gives with one hand but takes with another.

“The Liberals talked up a $33.5 million spend on police but Budget papers show $42.2 million will be clawed back from police by the Liberals.

“Yet again the Liberals say one thing – that they’ll protect frontline services – but do another.

“Police officers’ salaries are already being cut by this government – Mr Hidding must rule out sacking them.

“That would be a broken promise.”
