Brighton Partnership to Improve Roadside Maintenance
A collaborative partnership between the Liberal Government and the Brighton Council will improve roadsides in the Brighton municipality.
Brighton Council recently approached the Department of State Growth to discuss taking over roadside mowing, litter collection and landscaping works on State roads in the Brighton municipality – namely the East Derwent Highway and four key roundabouts on the Midland Highway in the Brighton area.
Under the partnership, Brighton Council will substantially increase litter collection and vegetation management on local roads to improve the visual amenity of the roadside reserves and roundabouts.
Both the council and the State Government are contributing $65,000 to fund additional full-time jobs in the council’s parks and gardens team to deliver the work.
This service will be in addition to new five-year maintenance contracts recently finalised in the South and North-East to Tasmanian company Stornoway Maintenance Pty Ltd, totalling more than $100 million.
Stornoway is also the contractor for road maintenance delivery in the North-West, the contract for which has been in operation since July 2013 (a three-year contract worth $22 million).
These new contracts will improve the level of maintenance services provided on our roads, and represent a substantial investment in our long-term asset management plan and in Tasmanian jobs.
The Department of State Growth has also implemented a new electronic Maintenance Information Management System to improve its road maintenance services delivery.
In particular, the system will provide more timely responses to maintenance issues, enhance auditing practices and provide efficient electronic reporting and documentation.
The Brighton road maintenance partnership is a great example of two tiers of government working collaboratively to deliver better infrastructure for the community.
The new Department of State Growth is about creating jobs, driving economic growth and delivering innovative solutions to provide better infrastructure for the community.
The Liberal Government is taking a strategic approach to improving Tasmania’s road infrastructure, and this new partnership is a great example of what can be achieved.
