Assurances sought on Telstra jobs

Posted on

Shadow Minister for IT and Innovation Madeleine Ogilvie today called for assurances the jobs of around 200 Telstra workers currently managing the copper network in Tasmania will be safe.

“There is concern the approach being proposed for the transfer of the copper network will lead to a slowdown in the NBN roll out and a staged shedding of Telstra staff,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“Further details of the deal between Telstra and NBN Co appear to show an incremental transfer of the copper network.

“The majority of Tasmanians will be connected to the NBN through fibre to the premises, and not through the anticipated fibre to the node model which means the copper network will be the first to be retired.

“There are no assurances that the 200 workers managing and maintaining the copper network will be offered new employment as part of the technology transfer plan.”
