World Cup Cricket in Tassie’s Backyard
The Liberal Government is committed to creating jobs and growing our economy.
Hosting events like the Cricket World Cup in 2015, the biggest sporting event of the year, will help us to achieve this.
Tasmania’s Blundstone Arena will host three Cricket World Cup games in March as part of the 49-game series to be played across Australia and New Zealand.
It is the first time in more than two decades that the event has been staged in Australia and will provide our state with the enormous opportunity to be showcased to a global TV audience of more than one billion.
Australia, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Sri Lanka are expected to play to sell-out crowds at Blundstone Arena and attract thousands of cricket fans from interstate.
It is events like the World Cup that will help our Government to achieve our target of attracting 1.5 million tourists to our state every year by 2020.
Tasmanians will also have a chance to get up close and watch the sport’s elite training at the Kingston Twin Ovals in the lead up to the Cricket World Cup.
It is a major coup for the sports fields that have been up and running for just three years, yet edged out the more established grounds that vied for the opportunity to be a training ground.
The State Government will invest $1.46 million in the event as part of a Host City Agreement for the Cricket World Cup 2015, and will also deliver on our election promise to provide $400,000 to upgrade facilities at the Kingston Twin Ovals.
I encourage all Tasmanians to be a part of the great event and get to Blundstone Arena and the Kingston Twin Ovals to enjoy world class cricket at its best.
