Whale warriors, Sea Shepherd always welcome in Launceston
The Australian Greens Spokesperson for Whaling, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson provides the following comments about the Sea Shepherd vessel, the MV Steve Irwin, leaving Launceston after a month in dry dock here.
Senator Whish-Wilson said, “It was wonderful to see the people of Launceston open their arms in welcome to the Steve Irwin and her crew.
“Tasmanians feel a close connection to whales and our precious Antarctic environment, and having the Steve Irwin in dry dock here for a month only strengthens these bonds.
“It lifted my heart to be able to take the food donations dropped off by Launcestonians at my office over to the Steve Irwin for her crew.
“With the Japanese whalers planning to return to the Southern Ocean despite losing an international legal battle, having a fully-rejuvenated Sea Shepherd fleet will never be more important.
“As the Australian government has abandoned international leadership on whaling in our waters, it again falls to groups like the Sea Shepherd to do the Government’s job and protect the whales,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
