West Coast Council

After considering the Local Government Board’s report on its Review of Councillor Numbers 2014, the Liberal Government has decided to reject the recommendation to reduce councillor numbers on the West Coast from nine to seven.

Given the recent closure of the Mt Lyell mine and the significant challenges facing council, government and the private sector to rebuild the local economy, we were concerned a reduction in councillor numbers at this point in time is not in the best interests of the community.

The Government has formally advised both the Local Government Board and the West Coast Council of this decision.

The Liberal Government is committed to providing the best possible leadership for the West Coast during this tough time and we will work shoulder to shoulder with the West Coast Council to deliver the best outcome for the community.

Through the West Coast Economic Working Group, both the Liberal Government and the Council are taking practical actions and working closely with the community to support families and encourage new jobs.
