New Vodafone Contact Centre to Provide Jobs and Boost Economy
The Liberal Government is committed to helping businesses create jobs and grow the economy.
Today I was very pleased to join Vodafone representatives as they released plans for their new purpose built CBD facility.
The new facility on the corner of Argyle and Bathurst Streets will provide jobs for 240 tradespeople in the construction phase and when completed will house 500 Vodafone employees.
This is an exciting boost for the Hobart and Tasmanian economies, and in conjunction with work underway on the Myer development will continue the revitalisation of the Hobart CBD.
Vodafone is expanding its Tasmanian operations, taking its total staffing levels in the state to more than 1,300 employees by 2015.
So far more than 400 new jobs have been created in Tasmania as part of their expansion.
The Tasmanian Development Board approved an Industry Assistance Package to Vodafone to support this growth.
This included a one off payment of $850,000 to support the establishment of a temporary facility in Hobart while construction is underway on the new site.
The flow on benefits to the local community from Vodafone’s presence in Tasmania are estimated to be around $90 million per annum.
The contact centre sector has proven economic value and provides sustainable employment, upskilling and training for employees.
Earlier this year the Liberal Government also beat other states to make Hobart the Australian base for Qantas call centre operations, securing at least 246 local jobs.
