Midland Highway project to kick-start in North

Posted on

The Liberal Government is getting on with delivering our long-term plan for Tasmania, which is all about economic growth and job creation.

The August 28 Budget is all about keeping our promises, fixing the budget mess and laying the foundations for the future.

As part of our commitment to rebuild essential services approximately $50 million will be spent to improve safety and reduce travel times at the northern end of the Midland Highway.

A key safety and efficiency project will be among the first started under the $500 million Midland Highway 10-Year Action Plan, funded by the Federal and State Governments.

Detailed planning is underway now for the duplication of the Midland Highway from Perth to Breadalbane with construction planned to commence in late 2015.

This section of the highway will become two lanes in either direction separated by barriers, leading to improved travel times, unimpeded overtaking opportunities and much-improved safety.

This important infrastructure project will bring substantial safety and time-saving benefits for Tasmania’s key north-south passenger and freight route.

The Liberal Government’s overall aim is to bring the full length of the highway up to a minimum AusRAP 3-star safety rating by the end of the Plan.

We have listened to the community and we will make the Midland Highway safer.
