Groom all tangled up in red tape

Posted on

State Growth Minister Matthew Groom has broken an election promise to cut red tape by in fact sacking workers whose job it was to cut red tape.

Deputy Labor Leader Michelle O’Byrne today revealed that four Heritage Tasmania staff charged with cutting red tape were sacked earlier this month.

Ms O’Bryne said it was hypocritical for Mr Groom to target staff who were cutting red tape for investment, particularly on farms.

“Matthew Groom was left red faced in Parliament after being caught out,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“He gave no answers and immediately resorted to attack lines and Liberal slogans.

“Mr Groom obviously sees these jobs as frivolous, which is in direct contradiction to his pre-election promises to cut red tape.”

A leaked email shows that the remaining 12 staff have been asked to reveal their plans for the next 12 months and whether they would resign or accept reduced hours.

“It is grossly unfair to threaten the remaining staff with the axe after sacking four of their coworkers,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Mr Groom obviously cares little for Tasmania’s Heritage reputation.

“How many more Heritage jobs will go under Matthew Groom?”
