Chairman of Parks Committee HCC, Alderman Jeff Briscoe – and who moved the successful motion last Monday at the HCC – said today the HCC will now put a submission into Wellington Park Trust to reject the amendment.
“The WPT has informed the HCC that it will not provide further information to justify the reasons or suspend the process of submission to extend the development zone into the natural zone just above the Organ Pipes.
“The HCC will now provide a submission to reject the amendment as the Trust has not demonstrated the proposed amendment furthers the vision, principles and objectives of the Management Plan, and the purposes for which Wellington Park was set aside.
“Whilst the Chairman of the Trust has indicated that the rezoning is not for the controversial Cable Car, every one knows why this amendment has come forward.
“Land is commonly the most significant cost for a developer. Rezoning of this land area at the request of a private developer is akin to giving public land to a developer and constitutes a significant public subsidy.
“Gifting public land in the absence of any form of development application is contrary to the Australian Productivity Commission recommendations, which require that all Governments undertake due diligence and demand a solid business case before public subsidies are even considered.
In the absence of due diligence or business case, the proposed rezoning is entirely inappropriate.
“Tasmania is littered with examples of failed projects that turned their thumbs up on these key points.”
