Abetz must discredit wrong health claims

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz needs to categorically state that there is no link between terminations and breast cancer, Shadow Health Minister Rebecca White said today.

Senator Abetz told The Project last night that: “I think the studies, and I think they date back from the 1950s, assert that there is a link between abortion and breast cancer.”

Today Senator Abetz has tried to claim he was misquoted.

“Having viewed the footage, I am not convinced that Eric Abetz was misquoted,” Ms White said.

“What Senator Abetz needs to do is front up and categorically discredit this warped idea that terminations can cause cancer.

“It is important that myths like this are not perpetuated.

“There is no credible health research to back up this theory.

“Comments like those of Mr Abetz whip up unneccesary fear and attempt to shame women for personal health decisions.

“There is no link between terminations and cancer.

“Mr Abetz knows this and should make that absolutely clear, not put out a half-apology where he doesn’t 100 per cent acknowledge that there’s no health or scientific basis of his claim.”
