Paul Harriss: Henty mine decision disappointing, but cautious optimism remains

Posted on

Today’s announcement by Unity Mining Limited that it intends to put the Henty gold mine on care and maintenance in the second half of 2015 is disappointing for workers, their families and the wider community.

However, it is important to note that the identified date is still more than a year away, and the company’s decision to put the mine on care and maintenance while continuing to invest in mineral exploration gives reason for cautious optimism.

A success story of Tasmania’s modern mining industry, with a renowned environmental record, Henty opened in 1996 with a planned life of about four years.

Since then, exploration has progressively uncovered additional deposits, extending the mine life again and again.

The Government hopes that Unity’s ongoing exploration, together with possible changes in external factors, may lead to a positive re-evaluation of Henty’s future.

We understand that this means there will be a period of uncertainty over the next 12 months, and we stand ready to work with Unity to assist workers and their families.

Today’s announcement, and Henty’s history, does underline the importance of new investment in mining to sustain an industry that employs thousands of Tasmanians and generates much of our export revenue.
