Jeremy Rockliff: Students excel in creative writing competition
Budding creative writers from Tasmanian schools have written about the things that matter to win awards in a national competition.
The Whitlam Institute’s What Matters? Writing Competition challenged students to write an opinion piece about an issue of significance in today’s society, arguing why people should care and what should change.
This is a fantastic way of encouraging students to explore current issues, while developing their creative writing skills, a highly valued part of our curriculum.
The Liberal Government is committed to improving Tasmania’s literacy standards, so we are pleased to see initiatives like this, which really serve to build enthusiasm in our young people for writing.
The four category winners from Tasmania, and the runners up, are to be congratulated on their success, while all students who entered are to be commended for having a go.
The category winners have been invited to participate in a Young Writers Forum, and attend an awards ceremony in August where they will be in the running for the overall prize.
